Alleviation of Seed Dormancy in the Desert Forb Zygophyllum simplex L. from Pakistan
نویسندگان
چکیده
Zygophyllum simplex L. is a succulent annual that grows on the coastal and inland saline flats around Karachi, Pakistan. The seeds are moderately salt tolerant during germination. Germination of Zygophyllum simplex seeds under various salinity, proline, betaine, GA and kinetin treatments was determined. Proline (0±1 and 1 m) and betaine (0±1 and 1 m) alleviated the innate dormancy of seeds, and germination reached 60–70% compared to 12% in the control set. At low salinity compatible osmotica alleviated some effects of salinity, but at higher NaCl concentrations both proline and betaine were ineffective. Gibberellic acid (0±3 and 3 m) and kinetin (0±05 and 0±5 m) substantially alleviated both innate as well as salinity-induced seed dormancy. At higher salinity (125 m), low concentrations of kinetin (0±05 m) and high concentrations of GA (3 m) were more effective. GA completely alleviated the effect of salinity at all concentrations used. # 1997 Annals of Botany Company

A plurality of causal mechanisms explains the persistence or transience of soil seed banks
Annual forbs form short-term persistent soil seed banks whereas perennial grasses form mostly transient ones in the central Monte desert. A conceptual framework predicts that annual forb seeds will have primary dormancy, whereas perennial grasses will have low dormancy levels. We assessed whether the dormancy traits of four annual forb species and five perennial grass species can account for th...
متن کاملEffect of Germination Regulating Chemicals on Seed Germination of Halogeton Glomeratus for Alleviation of Salinity Stress
Halogeton glomeratus (Bieb.) C.A. Mey (Chenopodiaceae) is an annual forb that is widely distributed in mixed desert shrub, salt desert shrub and pinyon-juniper communities of northern Utah. Halogeton glomeratus seeds gave only 78% germination in distilled water. Fusicoccin (FC) had some effects in partially alleviating innate dormancy while other chemicals had no effect. Seed germination was in...

An experimental trial was conducted at Dhabeji area to see the effect of chemical industry waste (organic with heavy metals) on seed bank of barren area of Dhabeji. An industrial sludge and its ash content were used in different concentrations, 10Kg and 20Kg sludge, 10kg and 20kg ash respectively to see the effect on seed bank, germination and growth of wild plants. After rainfall 17 species ap...

Pregermination treatments applied to seed of Gardner saltbush, [ALriplexgar&cri(Moq.) D. Dietr.] were evahtated for alleviation of seed dormancy. Treatments selected simulated conditions the seed might be exposed to in its natural environment, including dry afterripening, scarification, leaching, and cold stratification. Germination response to individual treatments was equal to or higher than ...

Syrian bean caper (Zygophyllum fabago L.) grows in dry and uncultivable wastelands. Because of high tolerance to adverse conditions, an experiment was designed and fulfilled to investigate the effect of two environmental factors, light and temperature, on Syrian bean caper seed germination. Experiment was performed in a completely randomized design with two levels of light (light and dark) and ...
